ACEA publishes new edition of Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has published a new 2022 edition of the ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines to address engine developments that are driven by a combination of regulatory and performance needs, complemented by necessary test maintenance requirements.

At the same time, a minor revision of the ACEA Oil Sequences for Light-Duty Engines has been published, to clarify the previous edition which was published last year. The revision clarifies that TBN measurements are not required for the C2-21 category, and is consistent with the C2-16 category.

The 2022 ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines replaces the 2016 version.

ACEA represents Europe’s 16 major car, truck, van and bus makers. ACEA members that manufacture heavy-duty vehicles are developing new engine powertrain systems to continue to improve fuel efficiency and deliver the higher performance expected from customers, while also meeting the latest stringent pollutant emission requirements.

New engine oil categories

New E8 and E11 categories are being introduced in the 2022 edition, replacing the now obsolete ACEA E6 and E9 categories.

In addition, ACEA E4 and E7 categories are being updated with new piston deposit tests, replacing CEC L-101-09.

E8 provides excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot  handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly-rated diesel engines  meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI emission requirements  and running under very severe conditions, e.g. significantly extended oil drain intervals,  according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for EGR engines, with  or without particulate filters, and for engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. E8 quality is strongly recommended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is  designed for use in combination with low-sulphur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers, so driver manuals and/or  dealers must be consulted if in doubt.

E11 provides effective control with respect to piston cleanliness  and bore polishing. It further provides excellent wear control, soot handling and  lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I,  Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI emission requirements and running under severe conditions, e.g. extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s  recommendations. It is suitable for engines with or without particulate filters, and for most EGR engines and for most engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. E11 is strongly recommended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is designed for  use in combination with low-sulphur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ  between engine manufacturers so driver manuals and/or dealers should be consulted if  in doubt.

Performance claims

New claims can be made against the 2022 ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines as of May 1, 2022.

From May 1, 2023 onwards, the 2022 ACEA Oil Sequences for Heavy-Duty Engines are mandatory for all new claims.
