Biosynthetic Technologies achieves API SN certification

Irvine, CA. April 21, 2014 — Biosynthetic Technologies (BT), a leading manufacturer of environmentally acceptable high-performance base oils and lubricants, announced today that BT has received API SN certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API) on both 5W-20 and 5W-30 grade passenger car motor oil (PCMO) formulations based on BT’s biosynthetic estolide base oil. According to the 2013 Lubricants Industry Factbook published by Lubes and Greases Magazine, 5W-20 and 5W-30 grade motor oils account for 79% of all PCMO sales in the US.

Biosynthetic Technologies worked with Infineum to create and test these PCMO formulations. Working with Infineum, a global leader in the manufacturing and marketing of lubricant and fuel additives, BT will now make these licensed PCMO products available to marketers interested in selling ultra-high-performance biosynthetic motor oils.

Engine test data submitted to the API shows these biosynthetic motor oil formulations achieved piston deposit and wear protection ratings among the highest of all PCMO products currently available in the market, demonstrating that BT’s biosynthetic base oils provide performance benefits not generally attainable with petroleum-based products.

“This opens a huge market for BT’s bio-based, biodegradable and non-toxic base oils to be used in motor oil formulations around the world,” according to Allen Barbieri, CEO of Biosynthetic Technologies. “Although many major oil and lubricant companies have been testing our products for years and have seen similar results, we now have concrete test results that can be made public. Furthermore, we now have third party validation from the oil industry’s most trusted certifying agency, the American Petroleum Institute,” continued Mr. Barbieri.
