Ionic Materials Appoints Jan van Dokkum as Chairman of the Board
Van Dokkum, Operating Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers,
Joins Famed Technologist Bill Joy and Founder Mike Zimmerman on Board of
Battery Materials Technology Company
WOBURN, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ionic
Materials, a battery materials technology company that has created a
revolutionary solid polymer electrolyte for batteries, today announced
the appointment of Jan van Dokkum as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Other Ionic Materials board members include Bill Joy, who was a
co-founder and former chief scientist of Sun Microsystems, and, more
recently, an investing partner with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers
(KPCB); and Ionic Materials’ founder and CEO Mike Zimmerman.
Jan van Dokkum continues to work part time as an operating partner at
KPCB. Jan previously served in executive positions at United
Technologies and Siemens.
Bill Joy, who also personally co-led Ionic Materials’ last round of
financing, has more than 40 years’ experience in technology R&D and
investing. Joy most recently served as a partner at KPCB where he helped
develop the firm’s strategy of funding game-changing technologies that
addressed climate change and sustainability.
“At KPCB, we set out to find and fund transformational technologies. One
of those grand challenges was to find a technology that could make a
solid-state battery,” said Joy. “I’m proud to work with and invest in
Ionic Materials’ innovation to bring better performance, safety and
lower cost to next-generation batteries.”
Mike Zimmerman was formerly at Bell Laboratories, where he rose to the
highest technical rank (top one percent of the technical community), and
is also currently a Professor of the Practice in the Mechanical
Engineering Department, teaching and performing research in materials
science at Tufts University. He is a serial entrepreneur and the founder
of iQLP, Inc.
“Jan is an experienced technology executive and operating partner. We
are glad to have him serve as our Chairman and devote more of his
energies to our success,” said Zimmerman. “And Bill is one of the
foremost leaders in impact investing, with unparalleled industry
expertise from his years as an inventor and investor. Having both Jan
and Bill on our Board, and their advice and energy furthers Ionic
Materials’ mission to deliver a solid polymer that can be used in every
battery. We’re excited to have their support as we expand our business
into safe energy storage solutions for consumer devices, electric cars
and the energy grid.”
