Cerilon advances North Dakota GTL facility to final design stage
Cerilon announced that its gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility in the U.S. state of North Dakota has successfully completed the front-end-loading (FEL 2) phase and is now progressing to the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage. This marks the final step before the company makes a final investment decision (FID) for this foundational project.
Nico Duursema, CEO of Cerilon, expressed optimism about the project’s progress: “Our progress has been enabled by the proven capabilities of our team and partnerships. The positive momentum we’ve achieved on the project thus far supports the delivery of this and future projects. All of this aligns with our long-term vision to provide energy transition at scale for the benefit of industry, communities, and the environment.”
Cerilon GTL North Dakota aims to transform natural gas into high-performance synthetic products, including Group III+ base oils, ultra-low sulfur diesel, and naphtha. This facility, set to be the first large-scale natural gas-fed GTL facility in North America, will also feature carbon capture and sequestration, making it a pioneer in the industry. The site near Trenton, North Dakota, has been selected for the first facility, and regulatory approvals are currently being sought.
Project timeline and de-risking
During the FEL 2 stage, significant de-risking actions were taken to improve the accuracy of the project schedule and cost estimates. Worley has been chosen to complete the FEL 3 FEED scope, which will include smart manufacturing operations design and digital integration. The final investment decision is expected by mid-2026, with construction on the first facility starting shortly thereafter and full operational status anticipated by 2029.
Cerilon has built considerable momentum over the past 14 months, laying the groundwork for accelerated growth. The company has secured world-class partners and finalised agreements with leading technology licensors, while also advancing commercial and financing agreements. Cerilon is focused on developing a portfolio of energy transition, chemical, and professional services companies, with a strong commitment to ESG principles.
