Synthetic base stocks – a sustainable solution

Sustainable development addresses the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is not just about the environment. It balances social development, economic growth and environmental protection.

How do synthetic base stocks (Group IV (PAO) and Group V) support sustainability?

  • Enables opportunities to reduce energy consumption: with the excellent low temperature fluidity of PAOs, there is reduced churning and pumping losses at low temperatures compared with mineral base stocks. The high viscosity index (VI) of PAOs, particularly the mPAOs, means that the film thickness at operating temperatures can be maintained even with lower viscosity grades. The low traction coefficients of PAOs versus mineral base stocks reduce the internal friction when operating under the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) conditions found in gears, rolling element bearings and cams.
  • Allows for extended drain intervals: due to higher oxidation and shear stability compared to mineral oil base stocks, PAOs extend the life of the oils formulated with them. Alkylated naphthalenes and other Group V fluids are becoming more popular to provide enhanced performance. They offer very good thermal and oxidative stability, seal swell capability, good solvency for deposit control and hydrolytic stability to increase oil life.
  • Reduces waste: longer drain intervals can lead to less oil filters and used oil being disposed, leading to reduced maintenance and associated energy and material costs.

In general, oils formulated with synthetic base stocks keep equipment running for longer periods between maintenance, provide better protection and cleanliness, hence helping to increase production efficiency compared with mineral oil base lubricants.
