Clariant expands facility to boost recycling of aircraft deicing fluids
Clariant, a global leader in specialty chemicals, has expanded its storage and handling infrastructure in Uddevalla, Sweden, to support the increased use of recycled mono propylene glycol (MPG) in aircraft deicing fluids. The upgraded facility, which serves Nordic and Baltic airports and airlines, now features two new storage tanks and a truck unloading station, enabling more efficient operations and sustainability gains.
In 2023, Clariant began integrating recycled MPG into its Type I deicing products, reducing the product carbon footprint by more than 25% compared to conventional fossil-based alternatives. This initiative aligns with Clariant’s commitment to lowering Scope 3 emissions and advancing circular economy principles.
“The expanded capacity in Uddevalla allows us to capture and reuse more recycled propylene glycol, minimising waste and reducing reliance on virgin materials,” said Sven Dammann, head of Aviation EMEA at Clariant. “This investment underscores our dedication to sustainable innovation.”
Recycled MPG is derived from airport deicing runoff, which is processed at Clariant’s Oslo facility before final refinement by a partner. The recycled material is then incorporated into Clariant’s SAFEWING™ Type I deicing fluid, helping close the recycling loop.
The expanded facilities were inaugurated in early November 2024, highlighting Clariant’s commitment to sustainable value creation within the aviation sector.
