HE “KING OF THE ROAD” IS A CONTRARIAN.
Scania, one of Europe’s largest heavy-duty truck manufacturers,
and so called because of its dominance in the greater than 16-ton
market, has introduced an oil specification that requires high ash,
while the industry moves to lower ash.
The company says it needs high-ash oils to ensure engine
robustness when Europe goes to Euro 6 in December 2012.
Scania believes that a heavy-duty engine oil containing high ash
is the right way to go for extended oil drain applications.
Called LDF-3, this specification is said to be more durable than its counterparts.
Launched in the market in 2010, ExxonMobil and Total are among those who are
making this product.
Scania’s position counters current industry trends, which mostly calls for the use of
low-ash oils in the belief that these products better protect Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF),
which is one of the aftertreatment systems being used in Euro 6 engines. However, DPFs
are reportedly lasting longer than people initially assumed, so a higher ash oil may not
necessarily be as detrimental to DPFs as once assumed.
To meet Euro 6 requirements, Scania developed two engines, a 13-liter 440hp
and a 13-liter 480hp unit. Euro 6 vehicle emission requirements for diesel engines call
for tougher nitrogen oxide (NOx) limits of 0.4 g/kWh, compared to 2 g/kWh for Euro 5.
Developed primarily for long-haul applications, both engines feature a common-
rail fuel injection system, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), an intake throttle,
Variable Geometry Turbo-charging (VGT) and a new engine management system.
The aftertreatment system include a diesel oxidation catalyst, DPF and dual Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts, combined with ammonium slip catalysts.
