In order to reduce the impact of marine oil leakage, USA Vessel General Permit (VGP) already limits lubricants which are applied in oil-to-water interface or might leak into water to be environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs). It means a lubricant must be biodegradable, minimally toxic and not bio-accumulative. Similar EAL legislation has also been issued in Europe (European Union Ecolabel).
A series of new renewable ester base oils have been developed, with viscosity range from ISO 46 to ISO 320, to meet the requirements of EALs from VGP and European Ecolabel which can be applied in marine lubricants such as stern tube oils, hydraulic fluids, and gear oils. With good hydrolytic stability and excellent thermal oxidative stability, these new marine base oils can prevent the formation of corrosive acid, decrease degradation, and reduce the formation of sludge. The newly designed marine series offers excellent anti-corrosion properties even without any rust inhibitors. Additionally, lubricity test results show the base oils have superior performance in extreme pressure and anti-wear that can provide more protection in equipment operation.
