GC expands biorefinery operations to boost bio-based products

PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) is accelerating its biorefinery operations in Thailand, following its success as the country’s first producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Building on this foundation, GC is advancing the production of high-value bio-chemicals and bio-polymers to meet rising global demand for sustainable alternative materials.

The initiative forms part of GC’s High Value & Low Carbon Business strategy, aiming to strengthen Thailand’s bioeconomy and enhance its competitiveness internationally. In addition to producing six million litres of SAF per year in its first phase, GC is deploying a co-processing system that integrates used cooking oil into existing refinery units to create bio-based products.

GC has commenced commercial production of three key bio-based chemicals: bio-propylene, used in rigid packaging, toys, and automotive parts; bio-butadiene (Bio-BD), applied in tyre and sports footwear manufacturing; and bio-purified terephthalic acid (Bio-PTA), used in polyester fibres and PET bottles. The company also plans to expand into other bio-based products, including bio-naphtha, bio-polyethylene (Bio-PE), and bio-monoethylene glycol (Bio-MEG).

According to Toasaporn Boonyapipat, president of GC, the company is enhancing its biorefinery potential by offering innovative bio-chemical and bio-polymer alternatives to fossil-based materials. He said these initiatives are aligned with Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model and respond to the global market’s shift towards sustainable industries.

GC’s biorefinery not only supports low-carbon growth but also promotes a circular economy by adding value to local agricultural resources and waste materials. Its bio-based products offer performance comparable to fossil-based alternatives while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

The company’s bio-based products have achieved ISCC PLUS certification, ensuring responsible sourcing and enabling brand owners to meet growing consumer expectations for sustainable materials. GC continues to invest in technology and international collaborations to deliver comprehensive chemical solutions and reinforce its leadership in the transition towards a sustainable future.
