Idemitsu launches immersion cooling fluid for data centres

Japan’s Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. has announced the release of its new high-performance immersion cooling fluid, the IDEMITSU ICF Series, designed to enhance energy efficiency in data centres. The product balances high safety standards with improved cooling performance through a unique combination of high flash point and low viscosity.

Developed by leveraging the company’s extensive research and development in cooling and insulating oils, the IDEMITSU ICF Series addresses the growing demand for efficient heat management in increasingly sophisticated data centres. As global data traffic continues to surge due to the expansion of digital services and infrastructure, immersion cooling is gaining traction as an alternative to traditional air-cooling systems.

Unlike air cooling, immersion cooling involves submerging servers in non-conductive liquid coolant, which offers up to 30 times higher thermal conductivity. This method not only enhances cooling efficiency but also significantly reduces electricity consumption—an important step toward carbon neutrality in data centre operations.

A representative of Idemitsu’s product development team noted that the fluid successfully reconciles typically conflicting requirements of safety and cooling performance through a carefully selected base oil and proprietary additive formulation. The product’s low odour, low irritancy, and high transparency also contribute to easier and safer maintenance by improving equipment visibility during operation.

Since its founding in 1911, Idemitsu has continuously focused on innovation in manufacturing and technical support. The company said that the IDEMITSU ICF Series reinforces its commitment to solving on-site industrial challenges while contributing to sustainable energy solutions.
