Japanese carmakers to showcase synthetic fuel at Expo 2025 in Osaka
Six leading Japanese companies—ENEOS, Toyota, Mazda, Suzuki, Subaru, and Daihatsu—have announced a collaboration to demonstrate the potential of synthetic fuel as a carbon-neutral solution for internal combustion engine vehicles at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
During the event, running from 13 April to 13 October 2025, the companies will deploy passenger vehicles powered by a synthetic fuel blend to transport guests and personnel within the Expo venue. The fuel is produced at Japan’s first demonstration plant for synthetic fuels, developed by ENEOS and completed in September 2024.
Supported by the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the synthetic fuel is created using CO₂ and hydrogen from renewable energy. This clean, drop-in fuel is compatible with existing infrastructure and vehicle technology, making it a practical alternative to conventional petrol.
Toyota and Mazda will supply guest transport vehicles, while Suzuki, Subaru, and Daihatsu will provide vehicles for staff and support services. All five manufacturers have confirmed that the synthetic fuel performs similarly to petrol in existing hybrid models.
“Synthetic fuels can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions across the lifecycle of internal combustion engine vehicles,” the companies stated. “By demonstrating their use at Expo 2025, we aim to show that engine-equipped cars can contribute meaningfully to carbon neutrality.”
This initiative supports the EXPO 2025 Green Vision, which promotes sustainable mobility and environmental innovation as core event themes.
