Kangtai starts construction of new lubricant additive plant
Jinzhou Kangtai Lubricant Additives Co., Ltd. (Kangtai), based in Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, held the foundation laying and start of the construction of its 50,000 tonne-per annum (t/a) Lubricant Additive Project on June 18, 2020.
The new Kangtai plant will be located in Area A, Xihai Industrial Park, Binhai New District, in Jinzhou. The Lubricant Additive Project includes a 10,000 t/a sulfurized alkyl phenate plant, a 20,000 t/a sulfonate (salicylate) plant and a 20,000 t/a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) plant, along with supporting process equipment, utilities, environmental protection works and other facilities.
Total investment in the project is CNY251 million (USD35.8 million). Construction is expected to be completed within two years.
While the demands of the market for better performance and higher quality of lubricants are increasing, the requirements for component additives are becoming more strict. Also, major additive companies have set up their production plants in China, which has created a strong local demand for supply of component additives. Due to the increasingly strict environmental protection requirements in China, the environmental protection compliance management of the government over fine chemicals (including component additives) enterprises and their raw material suppliers is also becoming stricter.
Under this ‘new normal’ market environment, in order to keep up with the component additive technical trends and guarantee the long-term supply situation for existing and potential customers, Kangtai plans to replace some of its outdated production units with newer technology that meet the new product manufacturing requirements.
Kangtai said that in the future, it will focus on producing components, instead of packaged, additives. This demonstrates its long-term commitment to the lubricant industry and creates a win-win result for the company and its long-term component additive customers.
Currently, Kangtai has a dedicated R&D centre and three manufacturing bases, capable of producing different additive components, additive packages and intermediate products, and subsidiaries in Shanghai and Beijing. Its latest production facility was built in 2016 in Jinzhou City, with an annual production capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes. Specific products being manufactured there include sulfonic acid (10,000 t/a), sulfonates (30,000 t/a), phenates (10,000 t/a), ZDDP (10,000 t/a), ashless dispersants (30,000 t/a) and additive packages (30,000 t/a).
