ATA says transport groups will be big losers with carbon tax

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) estimates that the rail and road transport groups are likely to lose more than half a billion dollars in fuel rebates from 2014 in connection with the government’s carbon tax regime. The ATA has set the total loss to the heavy vehicle industry at US$541 million. Stuart St. Clair, managing director of ATA, said, “We’re not looking for subsidies but there could have been some consideration given to things like accelerated depreciation in the tax treatment of assets to help with modernizing fleets, or assistance such as capital expenditure grants.” (July 12,2011)
