EMPA releases results of hybrid system battery study

According to research studies conducted at the Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engines, Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA), using recuperated kinetic vehicle energy that is stored as electric energy in a hybrid system battery (HSB), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) can potentially lessen vehicle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The study also showed that the overall HEV powertrain operation can be affected by low ambient temperatures which would consequently affect fuel consumption as well as emission performance. According to the researchers, โ€œthe main observation is that the amount of HEV cold-start extra emissions (CSEEs) of regulated pollutants are reduced by as much as 30% to 85% on average in comparison to sample CSEEs of conventional gasoline vehicles.โ€ (July 1, 2012)
