Evonik supports sustainable shipping
Evonik Industries, a multinational specialty chemical manufacturer that serves the automotive, plastics, pharmaceutical and other industries became the first German company to join the “Clean Shipping Index.”
The index, developed in Sweden, provides an online tool which helps cargo owners choose environmentally-sound sea transport. Thirty-one other large European cargo owners including Volvo, H&M and Phillips use the index.
“Germany has many large companies that can really make the difference when they use their purchasing power to stimulate sustainable shipping. We hope that Evonik Industries serves as an example to other large industrial companies to join the Clean Shipping Network,” said Sara Sköld from the Clean Shipping Network Association.
The Clean Shipping Index monitors major emissions from ships, such as CO2, NOx, Sox, waste disposal, and on board use of heavy chemicals in antifouling, lubricants, refrigerants and cleaning agents. The Clean Shipping Network creates the demand for clean ships, thereby encouraging carriers to use environmentally friendly products and systems. (June 14, 2012)
