Fiat plans to ramp up local production in India

Fiat plans to produce around 60,000 units at its facility in Pune, India, during Fiscal Year 2010-11, reports the Hindu Business Line. The company expects stronger demand on the back of new variants of its existing models and its plans to launch a new small car during December 2011. Fiat India President and Chief Executive Officer Rajiv Kapoor said that the company plans to launch a small-car model with a price point of around Rs400,000 (US$8,685) by December 2011. Meanwhile, the company recently launched two entry-level variants of its Punto model with price points between Rs457,000 (US$10,028) and Rs487,000 (US$10,686). With the new variants, the company is targeting sales of around 50,000 units of its Punto and Linea models during 2010, compared with sales of around 24,000 units during 2009. (March 16, 2010)
