Greenhouse gas emissions to triple by 2030
A new report that was released by the Indian government projects that India’s greenhouse gas emissions are likely to triple by 2030, rising from 1.2 billion tons to more than 4 billion tons. Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said that India’s carbon emissions are set to remain far behind those of developed countries, while at the same time stressing the country’s seriousness to tackle the issue of climate change. India currently produces 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which puts it behind China, Russia and the United States. With the landmark United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen coming up in December this year, this document is likely to set the basis for negotiations for India. (September 3, 2009)
