Honda makes Thailand core site

Honda Motor Co. unveiled its newest City compact sedan and said it is making its Thai plant a core location that will support production in other countries. The latest version of the City — the third generation of the compact since the original was rolled out in 1996 — has already been released in Thailand and is selling for the equivalent of ¥1.68 million to ¥2.22 million (US$15,989 to US$21,128). The City is currently produced in seven countries, including Thailand, Philippines, China and India. Starting with this new model, the Thai plant — located in the city of Ayutthaya — will become a core production facility for the strategic vehicle. Honda will dispatch personnel from Thailand to plants in other countries, as well as provide technological support for production activities. Regional production and procurement strategy functions are being relocated to Thailand. (September 11, 2008)
