Nissan to add engine manufacturing unit in Chennai complex

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is building a diesel engine manufacturing unit at Oragadam, Chennai, India. Suni Rekhi, chief finance officer of Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. said, “We plan to make diesel engines at our plant here so that the level of localization of all our vehicles goes up to 80%. The investment in the diesel plant will be part of our overall investment of around Rs45 billion (US$852 million). The Japanese auto major had also entered into a joint venture in India with Europe’s second largest auto maker, Renault SA. The joint venture company, Renault Nissan Alliance India Pvt Ltd, built a 200,000 unit per day vehicle manufacturing facility also in Oragadam, which became fully operational in 2010. The facility manufactures 1.2 liter and 1.5 liter petrol engines. Nissan has launched the Micra and Sunny car series from its plant in Chennai. (November 18, 2011)
