SIAM proposes pilot testing

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has submitted a proposal to the ministry of non-conventional energy sources for pilot testing of vehicles that run on a blend of compressed natural gas (CNG) and 10% hydrogen in New Delhi, reports Business Standard. According to tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy, Hydrogen-CNG (HCNG) engines (20% hydrogen, 80% CNG) delivered lower emissions, with a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and no significant improvement in fuel efficiency as against engines fueled with CNG alone. The project was initiated in 2005 when Ratan Tata and Anand Mahindra proposed the use of hydrogen in a blend with other fuels as an alternative to gasoline. (July 31, 2006)
