Thailand eyes role as regional hub

Thailand is on course to become a global production and export hub for alternative energy by 2016, said Krairit Nilkuha, director-general of the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE). The Board of Investment estimates that nearly 400 billion baht (US$12.1 billion) has been invested in the sector since the board initiated privileges for alternative and renewable energy such as solar cells, wind power and biofuels. This year DEDE expects renewable energy capacity to rise by 33% to 3,650 megawatts (MW), up from 2,800 MW at the end of last year. (January 8, 2010)
