Tokyo offers tax exemptions for hybrid, electric vehicles

According to Tokyo official Motofumi Kojima, Tokyo’s metropolitan council will apply tax exemptions to the purchase price and the maintenance of vehicles it considers to be super-low emission, such as electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. He added that the council is planning to submit a budget worth ¥160 million (US$1.7 million), the equivalent of exemptions applied to 300 vehicles. The April 2009 roll-out of the proposed policy would come just in time for the launch of the Mitsubishi i MiEV model, which will be launched in the middle of the year. With other vehicles on the way utilizing both technologies, the local government may have to increase its planned budget for this initiative over the next few years. (January 8, 2009)
