Toyota Group to launch budget car in Southeast Asia

Toyota group firm Daihatsu Motor Co. will begin manufacturing low-priced compact cars in Indonesia as early as 2013 for sale there and in neighboring countries. It will spend 20 billion yen (US$240.5 million) to build a plant and supply 70% of the output to parent Toyota Motor Corp. to be sold under the Toyota brand. Daihatsu is due to release a new mini-car featuring a fuel economy of 30 km per liter in Japan the summer of 2011 that is projected to sell for between 800,000 yen and 900,000 yen (US$9,620 to 10,824). Daihatsu already has a factory in Jakarta capable of assembling 280,000 vehicles a year, and is looking for a plot for the new plant, which will have an initial annual capacity of 100,000 units, and will produce around 50,000 in the first year.
