Ukraine pushes for 5% ethanol mandate

The Ukrainian government said it is advocating for the passage of legislation that would mandate a minimum of 5% ethanol content in domestic gasoline. Yuriy Boiko, Ukraine’s energy and coal industry minister, explained that if the ethanol mandate is passed, it would enable the country to reduce its dependence on crude oil imports. The new mandate, which would take effect on 2014, will also support Ukraine’s agricultural sector. The Ukrainian News reported that if the legislation is passed, the mandatory ethanol content in gasoline will be gradually increased to a minimum of 7% by 2016. (April 20, 2012)
