Vietnam looks at waste cooking oil

The Research Centre for Petrochemical Technology in Ho Chi Minh City will conduct a two-year pilot project to produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil. The project, which will commence later knowledge_base year, will produce one to two tons of biodiesel per day. Ho Chi Minh City’s Science and Technology Department will provide 1.8 billion VND (US$112,500) to build the facilities, while the Sai Gon Petroleum Import-Export Company will supply petroleum-based diesel fuel for the project. Nguyen Huu Luong, who is with the research center, said that the project will produce B20 for approximately 6,000 to 7,000 VND (38-44 US cents) per liter compared to the current market price of diesel fuel of 7,900 VND (49 US cents) per liter. The annual production volume will depend on the total amount of waste cooking oil collected. (July 4, 2006)
