Lhyfe launches Germany’s largest green hydrogen plant

In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, Lhyfe, listed on Euronext as LHYFE, has initiated the construction of its largest green hydrogen production facility in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Marking its first major venture outside France, the plant is set to produce up to four tonnes of green hydrogen daily, leveraging a 10 megawatt (MW) installed capacity.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on October 12, 2023, underscores Lhyfe’s commitment to expanding its green hydrogen production footprint. The Schwäbisch Gmünd facility is not just Baden-Württemberg’s largest but is also pioneering in supplying hydrogen directly to an industrial park, a first of its kind initiative.

Lhyfe’s ambitious roadmap aims at establishing the company as a dominant player in the green hydrogen sector in Germany and France by 2025. The plant, powered by renewable electricity sourced from hydro, wind, and solar power, is slated for commissioning in the latter half of 2024.

The hydrogen produced will fuel the “H2-Aspen” industrial park and a JET H2 hydrogen filling station, marking a significant milestone in integrating renewable gas into local ecosystems. The project, backed by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the European Union, exemplifies a sustainable neighbourhood solution and lays the groundwork for future eco-friendly infrastructure developments.

Luc Graré, head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe, emphasised the project’s role in bolstering Baden-Württemberg’s hydrogen economy, rooted in renewable energies. The initiative aligns with the federal government’s objectives, showcasing the economic and environmental potential of hydrogen in transport and industry.

Schwäbisch Gmünd Mayor Richard Arnold echoed these sentiments, highlighting the city’s evolution into a model region for hydrogen and refuelling infrastructure development. The completion of the Lhyfe plant will position Schwäbisch Gmünd as the state’s largest hydrogen producer, fostering climate-neutral production and bolstering the local economy.

Lhyfe’s trajectory is marked by significant milestones, including the inauguration of the world’s first large-scale green hydrogen plant connected to a wind farm in France in 2021 and the launch of the first offshore pilot platform for green hydrogen production at the port of Saint-Nazaire in 2022. With a solid business pipeline and a total installed production capacity of 10.3 gigawatts (GW) across Europe, Lhyfe is at the forefront of decarbonising mobility and industry.
