The Lubrizol Corporation, based in Wickliffe, Ohio, U.S.A., announced last Friday that it is ready to meet the complex requirements of General Motors’ next generation dexos® 1 passenger car motor oil specification. 

Testing has been underway to enable Lubrizol to leverage its Lubrizol® PV1500 series technology, the global additive company said. It added that it has an additive solution available for first licensing by September 1, 2021. This will enable lubricant manufacturers to use a single core additive to meet the specifications of API, ILSAC and GM dexos® 1 Gen 3.

The purpose for GM dexos® 1 upgrade is to address the motor oils’ challenge to provide efficient and reliable protection in new engine hardware, mainly smaller, higher power density engines equipped with new technologies. GM dexos® 1 Gen 3 focuses on low-speed, pre-ignition (LSPI) mitigation and fuel economy, with the introduction of two new tests: GMSPI3 and GMOEE. The specification also includes other proprietary GM tests, some with more stringent limits than Gen 2, as well as tests from the ILSAC GF-6 category.
