LyondellBasell strengthens circular economy with APK AG acquisition
LyondellBasell (LYB) has strengthened its sustainability portfolio by acquiring full ownership of APK AG, a German company specialising in solvent-based recycling technology for low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The acquisition aligns with LYB’s ambition to advance circular economy solutions and produce high-quality materials for flexible packaging applications in personal care products.
APK AG’s innovative recycling method complements LYB’s existing expertise in mechanical and catalytic advanced recycling technologies. By integrating APK’s solvent-based technology, LYB will focus on transforming hard-to-recycle consumer plastic waste—a significant challenge in the recycling industry. The recycled products will be marketed under LYB’s Circulen portfolio, contributing to the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and advancing sustainable practices.
Yvonne van der Laan, LYB’s executive vice president of circular and low-carbon solutions, remarked: “This technology complements our excellent mechanical recycling technology, as well as our proprietary advanced recycling technology. We see this as a crucial addition to our portfolio on our journey to a circular economy, helping end plastic waste.”
Securing a sustainable future
As part of the integration, LYB will ensure the retention of APK’s workforce and foster their expertise. Maik Pusch, former APK director, expressed optimism about the merger: “We are incredibly pleased to be part of LYB. LYB offers great expertise, career opportunities and financial strength to lift the company to the next level,” says Maik Pusch, former director of corporate development at APK AG and integration lead. “I am convinced this combination will help our technology reach its full potential, as well as securing a promising future for our employees.”
The acquisition builds on LYB’s recent developments, including the MoReTec plant, an industrial-scale catalytic recycling facility inaugurated in Wesseling, Germany, in September 2024. These strategic investments reflect the company’s dedication to developing sustainable solutions in response to growing demand from consumers and industries.
The purchase of APK aligns with LYB’s March 2023 sustainability strategy, which emphasises circular and low-carbon technologies. LYB has been actively investing in plastic waste sorting and recycling facilities across Europe, North America, and Asia, reinforcing its leadership in the global energy transition. The acquisition will enhance the company’s ability to meet rising demands for innovative, sustainable packaging solutions while reducing environmental impact.
