Maruti Suzuki to introduce new green technologies

Maruti Suzuki plans to bring new green technologies to the Indian market, which could include parent Suzuki’s mild hybrid system and downsized direct-injection turbo gasoline engine to reduce emissions by enhancing fuel efficiency.

The company said fleet emissions of carbon dioxide have declined by more than 11.6% in the last five years. “Going forward, we will continue our focus on investing in new technologies and strengthen our capability to bring down emissions per vehicle by enhancing the fuel efficiency of our cars,” said Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa.

Maruti’s parent company, Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp., had showcased three technologies at the Geneva Motor Show this year, which included a new-generation lightweight platform, downsized direct-injection turbo gasoline engine called BOOSTERJET and SHVS mild hybrid system.

“These future technologies will bring down emissions while raising vehicle performance. These technologies could find relevance in India and the company may explore these options as per customer requirements,” the company said in a statement.

As part of its work on future technologies under the government’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP), it has demonstrated the Swift Range Extender (REEV) which is an electric vehicle with an engine-driven generator.

“The recent new models, product upgrades and even minor changes have been substantially more fuel efficient than the outgoing ones. With Auto Gear Shift technology the company is able to offer the convenience of an automatic without the need to emit more,” Ayukawa said.
