Pertamina advances clean energy with Green Refineries expansion

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) is advancing its commitment to environmentally friendly energy with its Green Refineries project, showcased prominently at the recent Pertamina Investor Day. Under the theme “Fostering Collaboration for Clean Energy,” KPI is pushing forward to become a leader in the low carbon business era.

KPI is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero), Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company. The company is specifically focused on the refinery and petrochemical sectors, managing and operating Pertamina’s refinery assets.

Isnanto Nugroho, director of Planning & Business Development at KPI, emphasised the company’s dedication to strategic collaborations to support Indonesia’s 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) plan. “KPI is aggressively continuing its commitment to entering the low carbon business era. We open opportunities for strategic collaboration to gain financial support, technology transfer, and expertise to accelerate our NZE goals,” Nugroho stated.

KPI stands as a significant player in Indonesia’s refinery sector, producing around 1 million barrels per day of fuel and non-fuel products, integrated with petrochemical plants. This extensive capacity underlines KPI’s market leadership and its ability to adapt and implement new technologies, such as biofeedstock co-processing, crucial for biofuel production.

Nugroho highlighted KPI’s substantial market share in Indonesia, facilitated by the synergy within the Pertamina Group. KPI’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management is also notable, with a medium risk ESG score of 24.2 by Sustainalytics, a global leader in ESG research, ratings, and data.

Investor engagement and future projects

Hermansyah Y Nasroen, corporate secretary of KPI, elaborated on the proactive steps taken to establish strategic collaborations, particularly through events like Pertamina Investor Day. This year’s event, themed “Optimising Sustainable Growth,” aimed to strengthen networks between Pertamina’s various entities and potential investors. KPI presented several flagship projects, including the Cilacap Green Refinery, Plaju Green Refinery, and Blue Ammonia, with the goal of commencing these clean energy projects by 2026.
