Pertamina announces plan to build new satellite depots for Plumpang fuel terminal

Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina said it plans to build new satellite depots next year due to overcapacity at its largest petroleum products terminal, Plumpang, located north of the capital city of Jakarta. The satellite depots in Cikampek and Ujungberung in West Java do not have enough storage capacity either to ease the congestion at the Plumpang facility.

The Plumpang fuel terminal currently supplies more than 20% of Indonesia’s fuel requirements. The facility supplies 876 service stations across Greater Jakarta, as well as Sukabumi and Puncak in West Java. The average volume dispensed at the Plumpang fuel terminal is 14,250 kilolitres per day.

“The Plumpang depot is so big and we have no spare [facilities] to help cover its fuel distribution,” said Gigih Wahyu Hari Irianto, senior vice president for fuel marketing and distribution.

Pertamina is currently reviewing the locations for the new satellite depots, which are being planned to be constructed starting next year. The new depots are projected to cover 50% of Plumpang’s current distribution volume. Construction is expected to be finished within three to four years.

“The most important thing is to ease the burden on the Plumpang depot so that the facility will have enough time for maintenance. Imagine if there was a [capacity] shortage at the Plumpang facility as a result of technical problems. It would pose too much of a risk,” Gigih said.
