LPG conversion gets budget from India’s transport department

India’s Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee may have been thinking of a “painless transformation” of the country’s entire two-stroke auto fleet into LPG, but the available funds may not be enough to convert the entire fleet, reports said. The transport department only has Rs11 crore (US$2.3 million) in its kitty to spend on the LPG conversion project. The government plans to start with only 11,000 autos, although there are an estimated 69,000 three-wheelers plying the city today. (January 8, 2009)
