Repsol and Bunge partner to expand renewable fuel production in Europe

Repsol and Bunge have announced a significant initiative to enhance renewable fuel production in Europe, incorporating intermediate novel crops such as camelina and safflower into the supply chain. These oil-rich crops will be processed into low-carbon intensity oils, serving as feedstocks for hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), crucial alternatives to conventional diesel and jet fuel.

The introduction of intermediate crops expands the pool of sustainable feedstocks, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional diesel. Repsol will leverage its advanced industrial technology to convert these oils into renewable fuels, reinforcing Spain’s energy transition efforts.

Following the closure of a previously announced transaction, Repsol and Bunge have reaffirmed their commitment to research and development aimed at identifying further low-carbon feedstock opportunities. The companies are working closely with Spanish farmers to cultivate novel seeds, integrating sustainability into local agricultural practices.

Julio Garros, co-president of agribusiness at Bunge, stated that the company is committed to supporting farmers’ transition to low-carbon agriculture and enhancing global supply chains through innovative oil sources and expanded processing capabilities. He highlighted the collaboration with Repsol as a clear pathway to decarbonising the industry.

Juan Abascal, executive managing director of industrial transformation and circular economy at Repsol, emphasised that renewable fuels are integral to Repsol’s ambition of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. He noted that intermediate crops are key to ensuring a steady supply of low-carbon feedstocks.

Bunge is a leading global agribusiness and food company specialising in the sourcing, processing, and distribution of oilseeds, grains, and related products for food, feed, and fuel markets. Headquartered in Chesterfield, Missouri, U.S.A., Bunge operates an extensive network of facilities across more than 40 countries, connecting farmers to consumers and supporting global food security. Repsol, based in Madrid, Spain, is a global multi-energy company with operations spanning oil and gas exploration, refining, renewable energy, and advanced mobility solutions. Repsol is at the forefront of the energy transition, committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 through investments in renewable fuels, circular economy initiatives, and low-carbon technologies.

Bunge is leveraging its global network to promote the adoption of intermediate crops, offering farmers a new income source through sustainable rotations that also improve soil health and biodiversity. These crops, cultivated on fallow lands, supplement existing food, feed, and fuel production without displacing traditional agriculture.

Both companies view the initiative as an essential step toward a more sustainable future, combining agricultural innovation with industrial expertise to advance the production of renewable fuels across Europe.
