Shell announces new grease manufacturing facility in Indonesia
Shell Indonesia unveiled plans to establish its inaugural grease manufacturing plant (GMP) in the country, set to augment the capabilities of its existing Marunda Lubricants Oil Blending Plant (LOBP) in Bekasi, Indonesia.
The forthcoming facility is poised to bolster Shell’s production capacity, with an annual output of up to 12 kilotonnes of grease, addressing the surging demand for high-quality grease products within Indonesia. This state-of-the-art plant will incorporate cutting-edge technologies, such as a contact reactor, to ensure operational excellence and flexibility.
The new grease manufacturing facility in Indonesia will rank as Shell’s third-largest grease manufacturing plant globally, fully owned and operated by the company. Situated within the Marunda Lubricants Oil Blending Plant (LOBP) complex in Bekasi, the addition of this plant follows the November 2022 expansion of the LOBP, which doubled its lubricant production capacity to 300 million litres annually, up from 136 million litres.
“Adapting to and foreseeing the needs of our customers has been foundational to Shell’s enduring success. Our investment in Indonesia underscores our dedication to this customer-centric approach. The country’s rapid economic expansion has heightened the necessity for lubricants, including grease, which play a pivotal role in supporting Indonesia’s developmental goals across various sectors. This initiative will enable us to deliver our products more efficiently, sustainably, and closer to our consumers, thereby reinforcing our commitment to supporting their needs well into the future,” said Jason Wong, global executive vice president of Shell Lubricants.
The new grease manufacturing plant will manufacture Shell’s flagship grease product, Shell Gadus®, designed for critical applications such as bearings and gears. This facility will offer a range of high-quality grease products in various packaging options, including drums, pails, and fluid bags, catering to the diverse requirements of customers across multiple industries like general manufacturing, pulp and paper, steel, smelter, power, fleet, construction, and mining.
