Shell expands transformer liquid range with Shell MIDEL
Shell has officially launched its enhanced portfolio of transformer insulating liquids with the global introduction of Shell MIDEL, a range of natural and synthetic ester-based fluids. The new addition complements Shell’s existing Shell Diala gas-to-liquid (GTL) range and marks a major step forward in providing innovative and sustainable solutions for the global energy sector.
Shell MIDEL transformer liquids are already in use across various sectors, from conventional power grids to renewable energy, rail, industrial operations, and mining. The integration of MIDEL’s well-established ester liquid technology with Shell’s extensive supply chain enables the company to deliver more efficient, safer, and environmentally responsible transformer fluid solutions to a global customer base.
“With the addition of Shell MIDEL, we are enhancing our global offering to the industry by complementing our established Shell Diala GTL product range with the exceptional properties of natural and synthetic ester transformer liquids,” said Jason Wong, executive vice president for Global Lubricants. “Together, Shell MIDEL and Shell Diala comprise a portfolio that is broader, more innovative, and ready to meet the evolving needs of power grids across the globe.”
Key features of the enhanced portfolio
- Expanded Offering: Shell now offers a complete range of transformer insulating liquids, supporting diverse energy applications.
- Efficiency and Safety: The new range delivers improved energy efficiency, greater reliability, and reduced downtime.
- Environmental Benefits: Shell MIDEL fluids are biodegradable and non-hazardous, offering an alternative to traditional transformer oils.
- Global Availability: Leveraging Shell’s global network, the portfolio is now accessible to customers in key international markets.
The new offering follows Shell’s acquisition of MIDEL and MIVOLT from UK-based M&I Materials. While MIDEL strengthens Shell’s position in the power sector, MIVOLT fluids support emerging technologies such as battery energy storage, data centres, and electric mobility through direct immersion cooling solutions.
These acquisitions are part of Shell’s broader strategy to accelerate the energy transition and provide cleaner, more reliable power solutions.
