Shell Lubricants announces next generation of Rotella heavy-duty diesel engine oils
Shell Lubricants announced the next generation of its Rotella heavy-duty diesel engine oils — API CK-4 Rotella T4 SAE 15W-40 and the low-viscosity API FA-4 T5 SAE 10W-30. The announcement was made at an industry press event held in Washington, D.C. on July 19.
The CK-4 Rotella products will replace the current CJ-4 Rotella oils. The FA-4 Rotella products are designed for model year 2017 and later engines and will have limited backwards compatibility with older engines.
These new Rotella products will become available later this year. The first licensing date for API CK-4 and API FA-4 diesel engine oils is December 1, 2016.
These new diesel engine oil categories, in particular, API FA-4, was developed by an industry group comprised of original equipment manufacturers, oil companies, petroleum additive manufacturers and independent testing labs, to meet the next round of fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions regulations in the United States, which will go into effect starting with model year 2017 engines. The API CK-4 diesel engine oil category is intended for use in older engines.
