SI Group to close Singapore alkylphenol plant by 2025
SI Group, a leading global manufacturer of performance additives, process solutions, and chemical intermediates based in The Woodlands, Texas, U.S.A., has announced plans to cease operations at its alkylphenol manufacturing facility on Jurong Island in Singapore by the second half of 2025. The decision is a result of declining market conditions in the antioxidant value chain and high manufacturing costs in Singapore. Despite the closure, SI Group will continue supplying alkylphenols through its facilities in Europe and the Americas.
The Singapore plant, which was established in 2006, has played a key role in serving Asia-Pacific customers and in producing antioxidant products. However, shifting market dynamics in the region, coupled with rising operational costs, prompted the decision to close the facility.
“SI Group’s manufacturing facility in Singapore has been a valuable asset for our past growth and global presence,” said Joey Gullion, senior vice president and chief commercial officer at SI Group. “However, the current supply-demand balances in Asia and the cost to manufacture in the region make this a necessary move to ensure the long-term sustainability of our global business.”
SI Group will retain its alkylphenol production capacity through other manufacturing sites, ensuring continued support for its customers in the Asia-Pacific region. The company will leverage its European and American production facilities to meet ongoing demand and maintain its market leadership in alkylphenol supply.
Speaking about the broader strategic shift, David Bradley, president and CEO of SI Group, noted: “We’ve shifted our strategy in Asia-Pacific to better serve our customers’ needs. The region is important to our business, and we believe this new approach will help us balance the market dynamics with our cost position.”
This announcement follows SI Group’s recent partnership with Dingjide, a move aimed at further enhancing the company’s ability to meet the needs of customers across the region. SI Group remains committed to being a value-added solutions provider and will continue delivering high-quality products and technical support globally.
The closure of the Singapore plant is expected to affect employees, and SI Group has pledged to offer support and assistance to those impacted by the shutdown.
