TotalEnergies’ 2024 Outlook highlights paths for global energy
TotalEnergies has published its 2024 Energy Outlook report, offering critical insights and three distinct scenarios for the global energy landscape through to 2050. This annual analysis, now in its sixth edition, aims to inform public debate on the energy transition by exploring possible paths for the energy system in response to climate and demographic pressures.
The report presents three scenarios: Trends, Momentum, and Rupture. The Trends scenario examines current trajectories, suggesting a 2.6-2.7°C rise in global temperatures by 2100 without significant changes. Momentum assumes greater alignment with national decarbonisation strategies and predicts a 2.2-2.3°C increase. The ambitious Rupture scenario details a roadmap to limit global temperature rise below 2°C, which would involve a substantial global deployment of decarbonisation technologies and investments in renewables, particularly in emerging economies.
Aurélien Hamelle, TotalEnergies’ managing director for Strategy & Sustainability, emphasised the critical role of international cooperation, noting that a balanced approach is essential to maintain energy access while reducing emissions, especially in emerging markets.
TotalEnergies’ report underscores that although low-carbon technologies have made strides in affordability and scalability, geopolitical tensions, infrastructure constraints, and the steady rise of coal consumption in some regions present obstacles to rapid adoption.
