Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest automaker by sales volume, plans to launch two hybrid cars in China this year as part of its efforts to sell vehicles with lower harmful emissions.

The gasoline-electric hybrid cars, called the Levin Hev and the Corolla, will be launched in China in the second half of the year.

Toyota, an industry leader in hybrid vehicles, already makes the Prius and Camry hybrids in China, but has to import key parts, such as hybrid systems, which makes the hybrid vehicles more expensive. The Corolla and Levin hybrid sedans will feature made-in-China batteries, hybrid transaxles and inverters, according to Executive Vice President Yasumori Ihara, at the Auto China car show in Beijing last year.

Toyota’s joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group will make the Levin Hev, while its joint venture with FAW Group will manufacture the Corolla.

China has been the world’s largest car market since 2009, with sales rising 6.9% to 23.5 million vehicles in 2014, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
