The American Petroleum Institute (API) has integrated the SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 viscosity grades into its latest gasoline engine oil category, API Service Category SP.

The API 1509 Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS), which outlines the licensing and display of API Engine Oil Service Categories and Quality Marks, will reflect the recent changes following the approval on September 19, 2023.

Introduced in May 2020, API SP is designed to provide protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear protection, improved high-temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, and more stringent sludge and varnish control. 

API SP with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-6A by combining API SP performance with improved fuel economy, emission control system protection and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85 (85% ethanol blend).

This inclusion of SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12 in the API Service Category SP is pivotal for setting global licensing standards, according to API, ensuring aftermarket compliance, and establishing enforcement protocols for these viscosity grades. Several global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) currently recommend these engine oil viscosity grades. This revision will enable OEMs to suggest API-certified engine oils, aiding consumers in North America to select oils endorsed by their vehicle’s manufacturer.
