Total and Sonatrach extend their LNG partnership in Algeria

Total and Sonatrach have signed an agreement renewing their partnership in the field of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

This agreement notably makes it possible to extend the supply of Algerian LNG to the French market for another 3 years. Deliveries of up to 2 million tonnes per year will be made as a priority to the LNG terminal at Fos Cavaou. The agreement also includes the sub-charter of a LNG tanker from Total by Sonatrach.

โ€œ This agreement is part of the long history of cooperation between Total and Sonatrach. The quality of our relationship of trust made it possible to conclude in an extremely volatile market context. This new contract contributes to the flexibility of Total’s LNG portfolio and strengthens our position as a major partner of Sonatrach, โ€ said Laurent Vivier, Gas Director of Total.

Total in Algeria

Total has been a historic player in the energy sector in Algeria for almost 70 years. The group is active in oil and gas exploration and production (interests in the TFT II and Timimoun gas fields and in the oil fields of the Berkine basin), as well as in liquefied natural gas through supply contracts with Sonatrach. The group is also active in the marketing of lubricants and bitumens. In addition, Total and Sonatrach have launched engineering studies for a petrochemical project in western Algeria.

Total, 2nd largest private LNG player in the world

Total is the second largest private LNG player in the world, with a global portfolio of nearly 50 Mt / year by 2025 and a global market share of around 10%. With more than 34 Mt of LNG sold in 2019, the group benefits from solid and diversified positions throughout the LNG value chain. Thanks to its stakes in liquefaction plants in Qatar, Nigeria, Russia, Norway, Oman, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Australia and Angola, the Group markets LNG on all of the world markets.
