Automakers introduce fuel-efficient cars

Car manufacturers are realizing that as responsible corporate citizens, they have to address the concerns about high crude oil prices and global warming. At the recently held Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS), a number of automakers introduced their line-up of energy-efficient cars. The motor show, which enjoys the full support of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, carried the theme of Advanced Motoring, Hi-Quality Living. Johnny Darmawan, chairman of the organizing committee of IIMS, said the theme reflected the commitment of the national automotive industry to use sophisticated technology to enhance safety and comfort for users and to protect the environment. Bambang Trisulo, chairman of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) has proposed that the government reduce the import tax on hybrid cars by 20% to make them more attractive to consumers.
