COMAC and Boeing will jointly refine used cooking oil into aviation biofuel

Chinaโ€™s aircraft manufacturer, Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC), and the American multinational aerospace and defense company, Boeing, have agreed to refine used cooking oil into aviation biofuel. The two aviation companies launched an aviation energy conservation and emissions reduction technology center in Beijing in August. The center will focus its research project on refining waste cooking oil into aviation biofuel.
In March this year, the China-based Qingdao Fresh Bio-energy Technology Development Co. Ltd. refined 20 tons of oil from unused cooking oil for export to the Netherlands, which would be further processed into aviation oil by the biofuel supplier of Netherlands, SkyNRG.
Deputy Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Li Jian, said that China is projected to utilize 12 million tons of aviation biofuel by 2020, accounting for 30% of the net use of jet fuel in the country. China currently uses 22.5 million tons of cooking oil per year. (August 18, 2012)
