Pakistan launches E10

Pakistan stands to save some US$100-150 million in petroleum imports with the launching of E10, a 10% ethanol-blended gasoline, by Pakistan State Oil (PSO), says Managing Director Irfan Qureshi. Presently, the difference between pure petrol and E10 is Rs 2.40 (US$0.03) per liter. Speaking at the launching ceremony, Pakistani Federal Minister for Privatization, Petroleum and Natural Resources Naveed Qamar revealed that the government has also decided to impose a nominal levy on ethanol fuel, a by-product of molasses, to promote alternative energy. Qamar said that the government had already directed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to expedite the process of formulating the new rates. (August 16, 2009)
