ISP announces EUR60 million investment in EV battery test center
ISP, one of the world’s leading independent test institutes for engine, drive train, vehicle tests, and laboratory analysis, is expanding its engine and vehicle test benches to meet the requirements in the field of electromobility. With an investment of up to EUR60 million (USD64.8 million) in a new test facility for battery modules and packs, ISP is opening a future-oriented business area and expanding its portfolio by offering comprehensive test services for battery protection.
The new battery test center will offer performance and life cycle tests, environmental tests and safety and abuse tests for hybrid and electric vehicles. The first phase includes 12 pack and 20 module test benches and 78 battery simulators.
AVL is supporting ISP in setting up the new test field for battery modules and packs at the company’s headquarters in Salzbergen, Germany. In the future, ISP would like to offer a complete package of test services for battery protection and long-term testing: from performance and service life tests to environmental tests to safety and abuse tests.
The first construction phase of the battery laboratory, which costs up to EUR60 million (USD64.8 million) and for which AVL was awarded the contract, is scheduled for completion in 2020. The first battery tests are already planned for the end of the year.
AVL is the world’s largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing of drive systems (hybrid, internal combustion engines, transmissions, electric motors, batteries and software) for cars, commercial vehicles and large engines.
“In addition to the proven measurement technology, AVL can fully contribute its specific application experience for efficient battery testing to this project,” says Roland Jeutter, managing director of AVL Deutschland GmbH. AVL prepared a market analysis in advance and then, together with ISP, the concept for the battery laboratory. Both companies took into account a later expansion of the testing capacities right from the start, he said.
