Hyundai targets 50 mpg average by 2015

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor is reportedly aiming for an average fuel efficiency rating of 50 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2025. Speaking to Detroit Free Press, Hyundai Motor America President John Krafcik described the 50 mpg target as “do-able.” The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are working with the California Air Resources Board (ARB) to examine potential 2017-2025 fuel efficiency scenarios. One current proposal under consideration would call for a 62 mpg standard by 2025. The Hyundai 2011 Sonata and Elantra both boast 40 mpg. (November 15, 2010)
