Neste expands sustainable aviation fuel supply in Europe with VTTI

Neste Corporation has announced a strategic partnership with VTTI to expand its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply capabilities across Europe. This collaboration involves commissioning terminal capacity at VTTI’s ETT terminal in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, enhancing the storage and blending of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™.

This partnership is a significant milestone in Neste’s ongoing efforts to increase the supply availability of SAF to its European customers. The terminal, located in one of Europe’s major fuel logistics hubs, will facilitate a more efficient and sustainable fuel supply to numerous airports across the continent. The location’s access to the Central European Pipeline System (CEPS) further supports this objective.

“Neste is fully committed to supporting the aviation industry in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable aviation fuel is a key lever to achieve this,” stated Alexander Kueper, vice president of Renewable Aviation Business at Neste. “This expansion of our supply capabilities enables our customers to accelerate SAF usage at European airports and lays a strong foundation for fulfilling the requirements of the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation mandating the supply of a minimum share of SAF to European airports from 2025 onwards.”

VTTI’s role in the energy transition

VTTI, a global leader in energy storage, plays a critical role in Neste’s value chain, providing essential infrastructure for the storage and blending of sustainable fuels. Jaap Koomen, senior vice president at VTTI Netherlands Terminals, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. “We’re delighted to play a role in Neste’s value chain so that they can reach even more of their customers across Europe. By 2028, our aim is to have half of our business in transitional and sustainable energies,” said Koomen.

Benefits of sustainable aviation fuel

Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a renewable fuel made from sustainably sourced waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. When used unblended, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel. This fuel works seamlessly with existing aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure, making it a practical solution for reducing aviation emissions.
