India drafts new safety regulations

The Energy Business Department of India has completed a draft proposal covering safety regulations for the sale of fuel, cooking gas and natural gas. The regulations are being reviewed by the Council of State and will take effect later this year. The proposed regulations set limits for the sale of petrol, kerosene and lubricating oil in traditional stores or fuel storage centers. Also included in the regulations are requirements for fire prevention systems for gas, fuel stations and the location of oil depots. Oil depots with more than 500,000 liters of oil will be required to build their depot 100 meters away from schools, hospitals and community areas. (August 3, 2011)
