South Korea to mandate emissions reductions

South Korea finalized a list of 374 companies, including steel makers, oil refiners and chemicals makers that will be subject to mandatory reductions to greenhouse gas emissions, in its latest drive to fight global warming.  Of the 374 companies identified, chemical makers comprised the largest group (78), followed by wood-processing companies (57), steel makers (34), semi-conductor firms (31), auto firms (20) and shipbuilders (9). The ministry said it would also adopt a carbon-offset system, under which large companies will provide technical knowledge on carbon reduction, with smaller firms in return receiving emission credits.
