SIAM reports 11.22% growth in Indian vehicle production

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported an 11.22% increase in Indian vehicle production to 10,900,264 units in the April-August 2016 period, compared to 9,800,197 units in the same period a year ago.

Sales of passenger vehicles grew by 10.74% in the April-August 2016 period over the same period a year ago. Within this category, passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans grew by 3.01%, 40.74% and 6.67%, respectively.

The overall commercial vehicles segment grew by 7.97% in the April-August 2016 period, compared to the same period a year ago. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) grew by 4.41%, while light commercial vehicles grew faster by 10.65%.

The segments which saw the highest growth were three-wheelers and two-wheelers. In the three-wheeler segment, sales grew by 15.44% during the April-August 2016 period, where passenger and goods carrier sales grew by 15.12% and 16.98%, respectively.

Two-wheelers sales grew by 16.51%, where scooters, motorcycles and mopeds grew by 26.07%, 11.79% and 23.14%, respectively, in the April-August 2016 period.
